Arkassa Village – Karpathos Island

Karpathos Island is an island full of different places, west side is windy, with beautiful villages, beaches with an easy access. East side is steeper, with villages built on the hill, beaches closed by mountains. North side is more adventurous, with curved asphalt streets leading to villages or dirty narrow streets leading to wild beaches. Karpathos has still a virgin beauty, many churches with different history, traditional villages and excellent beaches.

Arkassa, an impressive village is on the west coast, opposite of Kasos Island has much picturesque scenery. The village square has many restaurants, modern café and super market. A walk in the paths in the village gives the visitor many photos of island houses with nice colours. There is fuel station before the entrance to village and pharmacy on the way to Finiki. Between the village and Kasos towers a rock out to the sea, Paleokastro hill. On Paleokastro hill there are ruins of the ancient city of Arkesia, the place of the old kings. There is hiking path on the hill leading on the top. On the feet of Paleokastro two excellent places lie, Agios Nikolaos beach on the left and Agia Sofia church on the right. Agios Nikolaos, the beautiful sandy beach, the place of battles between pirates and locals in the old times, worth many visits. It is an organized beach with umbrellas, sunbeds, shower and restaurant. Agia Sofia is a byzantine church, which had three basilicas, built one on the other and separated by mosaic floors. The place is amazing and the view from Paleokastro is fantastic!
